Groundbreaking Set for New Downtown Smithfield Community Park

Smithfield, NC — The corner of Market Street and 3rd Street N in Downtown Smithfield is about to get a major makeover. This October, the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation (DSDC) will break ground on a new community park, transforming the site’s overgrown and outdated landscaping into a more accessible, family-friendly destination.

The project is a collaboration between the DSDC, the Town of Smithfield, Johnston County, and the Johnston County Visitors Bureau. The design, created by Landscape Architect Clayton Narron, emphasizes accessibility, safety, and community use. Construction will be carried out by local company Alliance Hardscapes and is expected to take approximately 6–8 weeks to complete.

Plans call for refreshed landscaping, colorful plantings, outdoor seating, and playful design elements. The park will also feature public art inspired by books, interactive playground equipment, and outdoor games, all thoughtfully integrated with the nearby Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield.

“This project is about creating a downtown space where people can relax, play, and connect,” said Heidi Gilmond, Executive Director. “It’s an investment in both quality of life and the long-term vibrancy of our downtown.”

The DSDC is inviting the public to help name the new park. Entries will be accepted through October 30 at downtownsmithfield.com. The top ten submissions will be announced in November for a community vote, and the winning name will be revealed at the park’s dedication ceremony, where the individual behind the chosen name will also be recognized.

Once complete, the park is expected to become a signature downtown feature — blending landscaping, art, and recreation into a space that reflects Smithfield’s character and community spirit.
